Hi.

In defence of failure (why there is no ‘right’ number of nonprofits)

"Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half."
-- John Wanamaker (attributed), US department store merchant (1838 - 1922)
Only one puppy can win this race. You, however, are a winner just by looking at them try.

This whole thing about how there are “too many nonprofits” has got to stop. There’s no “right” number of nonprofits, no perfect formula for who gets to start and organization and who doesn’t.

True, nonprofits fail all the time. We fail in minor ways and we fail in spectacular ways, day after day. And it’s great.

Know why? Because everyone who is trying to do something fails.

If someone could pick out the winners and losers in advance and only back the winning people, organizations, or projects, then salvation would be at hand. Alas, that’s not how the world works.

So we try to do what we can, the best way that we can. And we often fail.

Know what? That’s a heck of lot better than not trying at all.

Yes, it’s a nonprofit. No, it’s not weird.
